Rickshaw registration has resumed after 34 years, said Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

The Dhaka South Mayor made the remarks when asked about old buses plying on the streets of the capital and why millions of unregistered rickshaws were still operating.

Taposh was talking to reporters on Wednesday morning after a regular weekly inspection of the construction of foot overbridges at different locations under the DSCC jurisdiction.

The DSCC Mayor said, "There are still some outstanding formalities with regards to post-application registration. We hope to make some progress this month."

"We took two major decisions during the bus route rationalization committee meeting on Tuesday. Firstly, old buses will be scrapped, and new buses will be added," said Barrister Taposh.

The DSCC Mayor also said that development projects cannot be successfully implemented without feasibility studies.

Under the Clean Air & Sustainable Environment (CASE) project, several environmentally friendly foot overbridges were built where trees were planted. However, the trees were no longer visible after the bridges were constructed.

When asked about the matter, the Dhaka South Mayor said, "I think we need to conduct spot inspections."

Taposh also said that he has issued instructions to accelerate the construction of two foot over bridges – one in the corner of Matsya Bhaban, and the other in front of the Judge Court in Old Dhaka.

"The construction of the foot overbridge in front of Dhaka Medical has not yet started. Only the elevator floor has been completed. Elevators have been added in a couple of foot overbridges, but we need to conduct a feasibility test to determine if elevators are required or not," he said.
