Upstream water damages haor embankment in Sunamganj, raising crop concerns
The Department of Agricultural Extension stated that the haor covers 114 hectares of land, of which paddy on around 40 hectares has already been harvested
A section of embankment in Sunamganj's Mohan Nagar upazila has collapsed as water from upstream moves through the area, allowing it to enter Eranbil Haor (locally known as Ikarchhai Haor) and raising concerns over standing crops.
The embankment near Hamidpur village in Bongshikunda South union broke this morning (28 April) under pressure from the Monai River, a tributary of the Sureshwari River, causing water to flow into the haor.
Local administration said increased pressure in the Monai led to the collapse of a rural road near Hamidpur village, through which floodwater is entering the haor area.
The Department of Agricultural Extension stated that the haor covers 114 hectares of land, of which paddy on around 40 hectares has already been harvested.
Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer (Sunamganj) Md Mamun Hawladar said the embankment collapse has allowed water ingress.
"This is not a crop-protection embankment but a structure along a water body, with some paddy fields possibly along its banks."
Meanwhile, Madhyanagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sanjoy Ghosh said the structure is a rural road, not an embankment of the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
He added that the road was damaged due to upstream water flowing down from Netrokona's Durgapur.
He continued, "Most of the crops in Ikarchhai Haor have already been harvested, with only around 5 to 10 hectares of standing crops reportedly flooded."
The upazila administration said local residents are making efforts to repair the damaged embankment and control further water intrusion.
