UK supports free, fair credible elections in Bangladesh next year: Sarah Cooke
Welcoming the Election Commission's ongoing preparations, Cooke said the UK High Commission stands ready to provide assistance in election-related areas
The United Kingdom has expressed willingness to assist Bangladesh in ensuring that the upcoming national election is held in a peaceful, free, and fair manner.
"We want to support a peaceful, inclusive, and credible election. We are also interested in helping with the training of polling staff and voter education initiatives," British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke told reporters today (29 September) after an hour-long meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka.
She said her meeting with the CEC followed up on "productive discussions" held in February regarding the upcoming polls, scheduled for early February next year.
Welcoming the Election Commission's ongoing preparations, Cooke said the UK High Commission stands ready to provide assistance in election-related areas.
Meanwhile, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed met with a five-member European Union delegation today to discuss election materials and other technical matters.
Earlier, on 10 March, the CEC said the British envoy wanted to know what kind of assistance the EC seeks from the UK in the next election.
On training election agents and election observers about electoral conduct rules and laws, he said, "We told them (UK) if they can help us, they are welcome."
