Two workers died in an accident aboard the lighter vessel 'FB Sea Heart-1' on the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram last evening (2 June).
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Altaf, 40, the helmsman of the vessel, and Nur Uddin, 37, the head cook. Both hailed from Hatiya upazila in Noakhali district. The duo had been employed for several years on the Sea Heart vessel, owned by the MA Kader Group.
Confirming the deaths, Mohammad Nazim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat Naval Police Station, told The Business Standard that the incident occurred around 7:30pm yesterday when another vessel belonging to the same owner attempted to tow the Sea Heart-1 upstream.
"During the operation, a towing rope snapped, critically injuring three workers on board. The injured were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared Altaf and Nur Uddin dead upon arrival," he said.
Another injured worker is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said the officer.
OC Nazim Uddin said, "Families of the victims requested the bodies without post-mortem examinations and chose not to file any legal complaints. As there were no objections, the authorities handed over the bodies to their families after completing necessary legal formalities."
