Two killed in Padma char shooting over hay cutting dispute
Local resident Belal Hossain said the armed group tried to assert control over the land where locals were cutting hay.
Two people were killed and two others injured in a shooting incident allegedly over cutting hay on a Padma River char (shoal) in Rajshahi's Bagha upazila this afternoon (27 October).
The incident took place at the Nich Khanpur area of the Padma char. Bagha Police Station's investigating officer Supravat Mondal confirmed the matter.
The deceased were identified as Aman Mondal, 36, son of Minhaz Mondal, and Nazmul Hossain, 33, son of Shukur Mondal — both residents of Char Khanpur village. The injured are Rakib Hossain, 18, son of Ashraf Mondal, and Muntaz Mondal, 32, son of Chan Mondal.
Dr Nihar Chandra Mondal, a physician at the Bagha Upazila Health Complex, said the victims had multiple gunshot wounds and were referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for advanced treatment.
According to locals, in the morning, the four went to the Padma char to cut hay when a group, known locally as the "Kakon Bahini", allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on them. All four sustained gunshot wounds.
They were taken to the upazila health complex, where Aman succumbed to his injuries. Nazmul died on the way to RMCH.
Aman's father, Minhaz Mondal, said, "My son and others went to cut hay on fallow land in the char. Suddenly, armed men from the so-called Kakon Bahini of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia opened fire, killing two."
Local resident Belal Hossain said the armed group tried to assert control over the land where locals were cutting hay.
