Shariatpur police filed two cases last night (1 March) in connection with an attempted robbery in the district on Friday night.
Meanwhile, another suspected robber died yesterday from injuries sustained during the mob beating, bringing the total death toll to three.
The attempted robbery took place on Friday night on the banks of the Kirtinasha River in Shariatpur's Domser Union. Villagers chased the suspected robbers and lynched eight people of whom two died on the spot.
Five individuals, who were injured in the mob beating and are suspected to be members of the robber gang, are currently receiving treatment under police guard at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
Among the three deceased, police have identified one.
The cases were registered at Palong Model Police Station under the Arms Act and for attempted robbery. Police have named five injured individuals and included 8-10 unidentified suspects in the cases.
Officer-in-Charge Helal Uddin of Palong Model Police Station stated that preparations are underway to file a murder case following the deaths.
"So far, two cases have been filed over the incident. Since three people have died, a murder case will be registered as well," he said.
According to the Police, a gang of 10 to 12 individuals attacked a sand-carrying bulkhead in Kalkini's Rajarchar area on Friday around 9:30pm. Vessel workers and locals chased them, prompting the robbers to fire shots and hurl crude bombs as they fled in a speedboat.
As news spread, locals from Dadpur to Domser Tetulia mobilised along the riverbanks and took to boats to pursue them.
During the chase, the gang continued to fire bullets and throw handmade bombs at the locals.
Eventually, they abandoned their speedboat in the Tetulia area and sought refuge in a brick kiln. Locals surrounded the kiln, captured seven of them, and began beating them.
Police and army personnel later intervened, dispersing the crowd and rescuing the injured. Around 1am, the wounded were taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared two dead.
Following the incident, police recovered a speedboat and a firearm used in the robbery.
The five injured have been identified as Ripon and Saeed of Munshiganj, Rakib Gazi of Bangla Bazar, Anwar Dewan of Shariatpur, and Sajib of Madaripur.
Four of them were initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital but were later transferred to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital on Saturday night.
Shariatpur Sadar Hospital Residential Medical Officer Mitu Akhter confirmed that five injured individuals are under treatment, including one admitted on Saturday.
"They are receiving treatment as per the prescriptions from Dhaka Medical. Specialist doctors are ensuring their proper care, and police are monitoring them closely," she said.
The bodies of two deceased individuals are at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital morgue, while the third remains at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Authorities will proceed with necessary legal steps regarding the bodies.
