Commuters are stuck in hours-long traffic congestion in parts of Dhaka since afternoon as Jagannath University (JnU) students continue their sit-in protest at the Kakrail Mosque Intersection in the capital, near the official residence of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, during rush hours.
"Traffic congestion remains high in Dhaka, at these hours on a regular day. With the protesters blocking the road, the congestion has worsened," Md Shafiqul, deputy commissioner of the Traffic Ramna Division, told The Business Standard in the evening.
"We are trying to manage the situation by diverting vehicles on alternative roads, but the movement still remains slow as people are coming out of offices," he added.
As of 7:00pm, they are protesting by blocking the road in front of the Kakrail Mosque, our correspondent reports from the spot.
The road has been blocked from the intersection in front of Kakrail Church, through Kakrail Mosque intersection to Matsya Bhaban intersection. As a result, no vehicle is able to go from Kakrail intersection directly via Hair Road to Intercontinental towards Bangla Motor or through Matsya Bhaban intersection towards Shahbagh or Gulistan. However, ambulances are being allowed to pass.
According to Google Maps, which shows the real-time traffic situation in Dhaka, heavy traffic congestion can be seen in the Karwan Bazaar area, Ramna, Farmgate, Dhanmondi, Moghbazar, Panthapath and adjacent areas.
