The government today (25 May) inaugurated a 25% fare discount programme on metro rail for elderly passengers and persons with physical disabilities.
Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam declared the announcement during an event at the Farmgate Metro Rail Station in the capital.
Speaking at the event, the minister said the current government is working to make public transportation more humane, inclusive, and passenger-friendly.
He said the special fare reduction initiative was introduced to ensure easier and more dignified travel for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
He also said the government has been taking various initiatives to strengthen social security and expand civic facilities for citizens.
The minister further announced that, following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, separate coaches for female passengers have been introduced on intercity trains ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for women.
Initially, one coach each on the Sonar Bangla Express and Jayantika Express has been reserved exclusively for women passengers from today. The minister said the facility would gradually be expanded to all intercity trains across the country after Eid.
According to the metro rail authorities, citizens aged 65 and above, as well as persons with disabilities or special needs, will receive a 25% fare discount on single-journey tickets on the Dhaka Metro Rail system.
Bangladesh Railway also said elderly passengers will be able to purchase tickets with a 25% discount through both online and counter services. Age verification for online ticket purchases will be conducted using national identity card information. However, service charges and VAT will remain applicable under existing rules.
For passengers with disabilities, the existing 50% fare concession on affordable and standard classes of intercity trains will continue. In addition, a new 25% discount has been introduced for all air-conditioned classes.
