Tofail Ahmed still on life support
The 82-year-old has been receiving treatment since 27 September and remains alive despite rumours of his death spreading on social media, his family said

Tofail Ahmed, one of the organisers of the 1969 mass uprising and the country's 1971 Liberation War, is in critical condition and on life support at Square Hospital in the capital.
Square Hospital Limited's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yusuf Siddique told The Business Standard this evening (6 October), "Tofail Ahmed is still on life support, but his organs - heart, lungs, and brain - are functioning naturally, though at a reduced percentage."
"That is why he continues to be on life support. He is still alive," said the hospital's CEO.
The 82-year-old has been receiving treatment since 27 September and remains alive despite rumours of his death spreading on social media, his family said.
"His condition is critical. There has been no significant change. His heart is functioning," his son-in-law, Dr Touhiduzzaman Tuhin, told Prothom Alo. He urged people not to spread misinformation and requested prayers from the public.
Born in 1943 in Bhola district, Tofail rose to prominence as vice president of Dhaka University's student union between 1967 and 1969 and later as a leader of the 1969 uprising against military rule.
At 27, he was elected to Pakistan's National Assembly in 1970.
Over his career, he was elected to parliament nine times and held several ministerial posts.
He is currently a member of the advisory council of the Awami League, whose activities are presently banned.
