Titash’s death: ferry terminal manager, 2 others held responsible

Three people, including Salam Hossain, the manager of Kathalbari ferry terminal, has been held responsible for the death of Titash on a ferry, according to a report submitted at the Attorney General’s office on Thursday.

Titash died in an ambulance on a ferry on July 25 on his way to Dhaka from Narail for treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. The ferry was allegedly forced to wait on the arrival of the Joint Secretary Abdus Sabur Mondal for three hours at Kathalbari Ferry Terminal in Munshiganj.

However, the committee, led by Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Md Rezaul Hasan, did not find Abdus Sabur Mandal, a joint secretary working on the Access to Information (a2i) project at the Prime Minister’s Office, at fault.
On July 30, a petition was filed with the High Court seeking a directive to take legal action against the joint secretary and the ferry manager.
The High Court bench, consisting justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and justice KM Kamrul Kader, is set to preside over the hearing of the report after its submission to the court.
On August 28, the High Court ordered the Public Administration Ministry to submit a report in this case, after investigation.
The court also sought Tk30 million in compensation, to be paid to Titash's family, and directed the concerned authorities to give priority to ambulance movement over all other vehicles at all ferry docks.
