The Transparency International Bangladesh has sought intervention from President M Abdul Hamid to remove present commissioners including the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and overhaul the Election Commission.

Terming the commissioners' controversial activities as unprecedented, the TIB said there is no alternative to reforming the commission to stop national disgrace caused by the constitutional body.

"It is unprecedented and embarrassing for the whole nation the way a constitutional body like the EC is giving birth to scandalous activities one after another," Iftekharuzzaman said in a statement on Thursday.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the Election Commissioned and its overall activities have apparently been plagued with serious transgression, but that they cannot hope for proper measures from the present commission to come out of this situation.

"The way the commissioners have held on to their position even after repeated instances of controversial activities gives enough reason to think that they think themselves above accountability and self-criticism," he said.
