A theft has been reported at the village home of Sharif Osman Hadi, an aspiring candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, while his family members were in Dhaka following his shooting, reports Prothom Alo.
The incident took place in the early hours of today (13 December) at Hadi's house in the Khasmahal area of Nalchity upazila in Jhalakathi. No family members were present at the house at the time.
Ariful Alam, officer-in-charge of Nalchity Police Station, confirmed the incident and said police had visited the scene and begun a preliminary investigation.
A neighbour, Golam Kibria, told Prothom Alo that when he went out for morning prayers, he saw two people behind Hadi's house. When he questioned them, they fled the scene.
Another neighbour, Jannati Akter, who had been asked by the family to keep an eye on the house, said she found some money wrapped in a towel lying in front of the house in the morning.
She informed Hadi's elder sister, Fatema Begum, who later came to the house and found that a cabinet inside a room had been broken. According to Fatema Begum, cash kept in the cabinet was stolen.
Hadi's cousin, Sirajul Islam, said the thieves had entered the house by breaking a window, taking advantage of the absence of family members.
He said the family has not yet been able to determine the total value of the stolen items.
The OC said police are speaking to family members and others in the area as part of the investigation and that legal proceedings are underway.
Osman Hadi, convenor of Inqilab Mancha and an aspiring Dhaka-8 candidate, was shot in the Box Culvert area of Bijaynagar in Dhaka yesterday (12 December), a day after the schedule announcement for the 13th National Parliament Election.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition and was later transferred to Evercare Hospital for further treatment, where he remains in critical condition.
