The benchmark of quality of service in telecom and internet services along with key performance indicator of the service providers will be set anew as the previous indicators are not working anymore, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser has said.

He made the remark at a discussion on steps to get high speed, quality and easy internet at the grassroots level, organised by the Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers' Association at the National Press Club today (9 March).

During the event, freelancers, commercial internet users and others expressed their disappointment over the quality of telecommunication in the country.

Blaming the faulty and partial policies by the past government along with the mentality of the service providers for the low quality, Faiz said competition and appropriate services will be assured by redesigning the telecom sector.

He said the mobile and broadband internet providers will lose business to Starlink if they cannot improve their services.

"The quality of the internet in Bangladesh is worse than that in many war-torn nations. The current government won't make policies to benefit a few companies like the old government did," Faiz said.

At the event, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain asked for the publication of a white paper on the corruption committed by the past government and urged the interim government to carry on with the reforms in the telecom sector.
