Teen domestic worker dies after fall from Banani building; flat owner questioned
Witnesses at the scene claimed that she had been tortured and thrown from the building.
A 15-year-old domestic worker died after falling from the roof of a residential building in the Banani area of the capital yesterday (8 March).
The deceased was identified as Pinky, who worked at a flat on the third floor of the nine-storey building. Police recovered her body at around 3pm yesterday after receiving information about the incident.
Confirming the matter, Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said tension spread in the area following the domestic worker's death, but police later brought the situation under control.
He added that the body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital for autopsy.
The victim's family has been informed and a case will be filed once they arrive, the OC said.
He also said Rakibul Hasan, owner of the flat where Pinky worked, was brought to the police station for questioning, and legal action will be taken as necessary.
Earlier, Banani Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mehedi Hasan said the girl could not have jumped from the third-floor flat and that she fell from the main roof of the building.
CCTV footage shows Pinky leaving the flat alone after opening the door, he said, adding that police are verifying whether she went to the roof alone or with someone else.
Witnesses at the scene claimed that she had been tortured and thrown from the building.
Following the incident, an agitated crowd attempted to enter the house through the gate, but additional police later brought the situation under control.
Police, quoting house owner Rakibul, said another domestic worker lives in the same flat and that the incident may have stemmed from a dispute over a mobile phone conversation.
