Tailors busy in Rajshahi ahead of Eid

With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, tailors in the city are passing busy days as customers rush to place advance orders for their preferred outfits.

Fashion-conscious buyers are thronging tailoring shops in key commercial areas, including Saheb Bazar, New Market and the Court area, to ensure delivery of their dresses before Chand Raat.

To meet the growing demand, many tailors are working extended hours. Nur Mohammad, proprietor of Bandhan Tailors at Saheb Bazar, said they will continue taking orders until the 20th of Ramadan.

He said most of the orders are for salwar-kameez, particularly those made from Pakistani georgette fabric, which is witnessing high demand this season.

A female customer at the shop said she prefers customised dresses for Eid as tailoring allows her to select designs and fittings according to her choice.

Tony, owner of Anannya Ladies Tailor at RDA Market, said the number of customers has increased as Eid draws nearer. He added that blouse and burqa orders are particularly high this year.

Sajjad Hossain, owner of another well-known tailoring shop in the city, said although there is steady work, the pressure is comparatively lower than in previous years.

"Earlier, we used to stop taking orders within the first few days of Ramadan due to overwhelming demand. Now, we are still accepting orders," he said.

Siraj of Chhanda Tailors and Murshed Ali of Juthi Tailors expressed similar views, saying the rush is moderate but manageable this year.

Tailors said they charge between Tk 300 and Tk 350 for stitching a salwar-kameez, while blouse stitching costs around Tk 150-300, petticoat Tk 80-130, gown Tk 300-400, burqa Tk 300-500 and children's frocks Tk 200-300.

Charges increase depending on design and embroidery, sometimes reaching Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,500 for heavily embellished outfits, they added.

Meanwhile, tailors at New Market who specialise in men's clothing said men are showing greater interest in punjabis ahead of Eid compared to shirts and pants.

They said stitching a pair of pants costs Tk 600-700, while shirts cost Tk 300-500, depending on design and fabric.

Despite various challenges, tailors remain hopeful of a final rush in the last days of Ramadan as customers complete their Eid preparations.

They expressed optimism that business will pick up further before Eid, bringing relief to craftsmen who depend on the festive season for higher earnings.
