Students, locals demolish memorial in Faridpur
The demolition began around 8am with the use of an excavator

A group of agitated students and locals demolished a memorial plaque featuring a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Awami League's election symbol, the boat, at the Chourasta intersection of Boalmari upazila in Faridpur today (8 February).
The demolition began around 8am with the use of an excavator. Some individuals present at the scene also called for replacing the memorial with a Quranic plaque and renaming the area Quran Chattar.
Upon receiving the news, a police team led by Boalmari Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdus Sabur arrived at the scene and attempted to stop the demolition. However, the protesters ignored their instructions and continued.
As tensions rose, the crowd chanted slogans against the police. Unable to prevent the demolition, the police eventually left the site.
Boalmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Golam Rasul declined to comment regarding the matter.
Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Tanvir Hasan Chowdhury said he had been informed of the incident and would take action after visiting the site.
The memorial was constructed at the central intersection in Boalmari upazila during the previous Awami League government's tenure.
It was inaugurated by former fisheries and livestock minister and Awami League MP Abdur Rahman and was built using government funds.
