Mobile traders lift nationwide shutdown after Sumash Tech CEO freed from DB custody
The next course of movement will be announced tomorrow
Mobile phone traders have withdrawn the closure of all handset retail shops across the country after the Detective Branch (DB) of police released the Sumash Tech Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abu Sayeed Piash from custody.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard today (19 November), Mobile Business Community, Bangladesh (MBCB) Vice President Shamim Mollah said, "Piash was released around 7pm."
"We will announce our next course of movement tomorrow," he added.
Earlier in the day, at a press conference, Shamim Mollah announced the closure of retail handset shops, protesting the detention of the Sumash Tech CEO and the upcoming launch of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR).
Traders alleged that the detention of CEO Piash, also the secretary of MBCB, is a move to disrupt their protest against the NEIR, which they claim will shrink the mobile market.
The MBCB had warned that if Piash was not released by today, they would launch a tougher nationwide movement and "bring the country to a standstill".
Around 3am today, smartphone and gadgets businessman Piash was picked up by DB officials.
