A six-month-old baby went missing after a battery-powered autorickshaw fell into an open drain in Chattogram's Chawkbazar yesterday (18 April).

The incident took place around 8pm near the Nawab Hotel in the Kapasgola area, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

According to locals, the baby and its mother were passengers in the rickshaw. The mother was rescued from the drain but the infant was swept away by the strong current.

The child remains missing as of filing this report.

Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel are conducting a search operation to rescue the missing child.

"We are continuing the rescue efforts, but the baby has not been found yet," said Alok Chakma, team leader of Chandanpura Fire Station.

In the past four years, at least 12 people have died after falling into canals and drains across Chattogram.
