Ship carrying limestone sank in Bay

A lighterage ship carrying 850 tonnes of limestone sank in strong waves in the Bhasanchar area of Noakhali in the Bay of Bengal today (18 May).
The accident occurred at around noon when it passed the Osman-3 red buoy near Bhasanchar, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chittagong Joint Director Md Sabur Khan told The Business Standard.
According to BIWTA authorities, cracks appeared on the bottom of the ship due to strong waves in adverse weather conditions at sea. As the ship slowly sank, a fishing trawler rescued 12 sailors.
The ship named MV Ya Elahi is known to be owned by a Chittagong-based company, Messrs. Jagua Traders. The ship was going from Chattogram to Mongla Port.
Meanwhile, BIWTA has started marking the accident site at sea so that other ships can pass through the area with caution.
