Jhenaigati UNO, OC withdrawn over Jamaat leader murder
The remaining procedures regarding their removal would be completed as soon as possible.
Senior Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed today (29 January) said the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and the officer-in-charge (OC) concerned were withdrawn following the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader during a clash in Sherpur yesterday.
The remaining procedures regarding their removal would be completed as soon as possible, he said at a press briefing this afternoon.
Describing the incident as highly condemnable, Akhtar said that UNO Ashraful Alam Russell has also been made Officer on Special Duty, as the clash violated the electoral code of conduct.
Rezaul Karim, general secretary of the Sreebardi upazila unit of the Jamaat, was critically injured during a clash with the BNP at an election manifesto event at the Jhenaigati Bazar area on Wednesday evening. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
At the same briefing, the EC senior secretary also said the commission has decided that candidates whose nominations are upheld or reinstated by the court by 8 February may be included in postal ballots for expatriate voters.
He said candidates reinstated after 8 February will not be eligible for postal ballots due to time constraints in printing, dispatch, and return of ballots.
Akhtar also said campaign banners may be displayed within the prescribed size of 10 feet by 4 feet, following the code of conduct.
