Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a friend of the poor having allocated Tk107,614 crore for social safety net programmes this fiscal year, which is about 17.4 percent of the budget.

Dr Momen said this on Sunday at a virtual gift distribution ceremony for his constituency of Sylhet, according to a press release.

During the programme, Tk3.5 lakh was distributed from a voluntary fund to 35 people, Tk10,000 each. Earlier this year, Tk6.5 lakh was distributed and Tk20 lakh has been distributed in the last two years from the fund.

He said, PM Sheikh Hasina has provided homes to the landless and homeless people of Sylhet. Those who have not yet received homes will be given them in phases.

The process of delivering an old age allowance, widow allowance, disability allowance, and the VGF card,  started during PM Sheikh Hasina's tenure of government.

According to the Prime Minister's directives, freedom fighters will get a monthly honorarium of Tk20,000 although it started with Tk5,000 only, he noted.

"Our domestic market during the Covid-19 pandemic is quite good compared to neighbouring countries, so we are moving forward economically. In this way, we will build up Bangladesh as Bangabandhu's dream of a 'Golden Bengal', a developed and prosperous nation by 2041.

The foreign minister continued, "We have been able to celebrate the birth centenary of Bangabandhu and the golden jubilee of the country's independence as the people of the country elected Awami League for the third time," and Bangladesh has attained the status of a developing nation.
