In response to the brutal killing of Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Shammo, authorities today (14 May) announced a series of urgent security measures regarding Suhrawardy Udyan, including the installation of a permanent police box and a ban on public entry after 8pm.

The decisions were made at an emergency meeting, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan today (14 May), between the DU administration and Suhrawardy Udyan authorities to restore safety and order in the area.

The meeting also decided that starting tomorrow (15 May), regular patrols and search operations will be conducted at the Suhrawardy Udyan.

Additionally, DU has announced that tomorrow will be observed as a Mourning Day. While academic activities, including classes and exams, will be suspended until 1:00pm, administrative offices will remain open and function as usual.

Other measures include the permanent closure of the gate behind the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture to curb unauthorised entry, and a dedicated monitoring committee will be formed to evict illegal vendors, ensure tighter security and combat drug-related activities through joint efforts by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Dhaka South City Corporation, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the Department of Narcotics Control, Kali Mandir authority, and Bangla Academy.

Suhrawardy Udyan will be equipped with additional lighting and CCTV cameras to improve safety.

Furthermore, a structured management model, akin to Ramna Park, will be implemented.

Authorities have pledged to implement these decisions immediately to transform Suhrawardy Udyan from a place of fear to a safe and peaceful public space.

The government also emphasised the importance of cooperation from the university administration and students in this effort.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan also present at the meeting.
