Security tightened around EC building after crude bomb explosion
The EC has instructed that business operations surrounding the building be suspended from evening until midnight and that police patrols be increased in front of and around the EC premises.
The Election Commission (EC) has ordered heightened security around its headquarters in Dhaka's Agargaon following a cocktail (crude bomb) explosion outside the building on Saturday (25 October).
According to a letter signed by Chief Security Officer Shahid Abdus Salam and sent to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner today (28 October), the EC has directed authorities to ensure round-the-clock security in and around the Election Commission Secretariat ahead of the upcoming 13th National Election.
The letter states that on Saturday night at around 11:10pm, a group of miscreants detonated a crude bomb in front of the sculpture located outside the EC building. The incident has raised serious concerns over the security in the premises, the EC said.
The commission also noted that ongoing commercial activities around the building during evening and late-night hours, particularly after office time and on holidays, pose an additional security threat.
In response, the EC has instructed that business operations surrounding the building be suspended from evening until midnight and that police patrols be increased in front of and around the EC premises.
