Security ramped up outside Prothom Alo, Daily Star offices amid fears of renewed attacks
All employees of The Daily Star have been directed to work from home, several journalists of the newspaper confirmed.
Additional police have been deployed outside the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star following clashes between police and Inqilab Mancha activists near the chief adviser's residence, State Guest House Jamuna.
The extra police was deployed as a precaution this afternoon (6 February), confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner (Tejgaon zone) Mohammad Akkas Ali.
He told The Business Standard that although there was no specific security threat, additional police were stationed in front of the two newspaper offices as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, amid fears of another possible attack, all employees of The Daily Star have been directed to work from home, several journalists of the newspaper confirmed.
Earlier in the afternoon, activists under the banner of Inqilab Mancha attempted to march towards Jamuna, demanding justice for the killing of the platform's spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, after breaking through police barricades in front of Hotel InterContinental.
Clashes broke out in phases between the two sides. Police used water cannons, tear gas, sound grenades, and batons to disperse the protesters, while the demonstrators hurled brickbats at the police.
At least 40 people from both sides were injured.
Earlier, on the night of 18 December, following reports of the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were attacked, vandalised, looted, and set on fire.
