Schoolboy tied to tree, tortured in Gaibandha; 2 arrested

Two men were arrested from Gaibandha's Sundarganj upazila on Sunday night for tying a schoolboy to a tree and torturing him on charges of theft at Dhumaitari village.
The eighth grader was accused of stealing a cow of one Raja Mia, a resident of the village but the boy rejected the allegation.
Raja picked up the schoolboy from his house on Saturday night. He kept the teenager tied to a tree throughout the night and tortured him, before police rescued the boy on Sunday morning, said Abdullah Jaman, officer-in-charge of Sundarganj Police Station.
Police arrested Rana Miah and Abbas Miah after the victim's elder brother filed a case against 13 people at Sundarganj Police Station on Sunday night.
At least 4,381 children were subjected to various forms of violence last year, according to Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF). In a report, BSAF said 219 children were victims of torture and violence during 2019.
