Sarwoer Alam takes over as Sylhet DC, says law and order, environment among priorities

Sarwoer Alam has taken over as the deputy commissioner of Sylhet after the outgoing DC Muhammad Sher Mahbub Murad was made an officer on special duty (OSD) amid outcry over recent stone looting in the tourist district.

Upon assuming office as the deputy commissioner today, Sarwoer was greeted with flowers by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi and other senior officials.

After the formalities, the newly appointed DC spoke to the media. "The government has entrusted me with this responsibility, and I will do my best to serve the people of the district. I seek the cooperation of all in Sylhet. When we all work together, good things will surely happen. Sylhet will become a beautiful district," he said.

Sarwoer said several key areas will be his top priorities. "My special attention will be on law and order first, followed by the environment, tourism, education, and healthcare."

Issuing a warning against any possible environmentally destructive activity in Sylhet, he said, "Sylhet is referred to as the 'daughter of nature', and it should remain that way. Development will certainly take place here, but it must be sustainable development — ensuring no harm comes to the environment."

He also called for everyone's cooperation in advancing development and protecting Sylhet's environment.

Sarwoer was appointed as the Sylhet DC after the public administration ministry on 18 August issued a notification, making the outgoing Sylhet deputy commissioner Muhammad Sher Mahbub Murad an officer on special duty (OSD) in the face of nationwide criticism over illegal stone extraction in the northeastern district.

Sarowar, who received public praise for his work as a RAB magistrate, also served as the private secretary to Law Adviser Asif Nazrul, holding the rank of deputy secretary.
