At least three people, including two women, were killed in a truck-ambulance collision at Rajshahi's Rajabarihat Check Post area early today (3 March).
Two others have been taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for treatment, said police.
The deceased were identified as Jafar Iqbal, an ambulance driver from Hossaniganj area in Rajshahi city, and Sundori and Aduri from the district's Godagari area.
Contacted, In-charge of Premtali Investigation Centre in Godagari and Sub-Inspector Maksud said, "The family members of a person who had a heart attack were taking the patient to RMCH being referred by Godagari Upazila Health Complex."
"The ambulance had a head-on collision with a truck which was coming from Rajshahi at Rajabarihat Check Post. The accident killed the ambulance driver and the two women on the spot, while the two injured were rescued and taken to RMCH," the SI said.
The SI added that the bodies have been taken to Premtali upazila Health Complex, which will be handed over to their families after autopsy.
"The truck has been seized, but the driver managed to flee. Legal steps are being taken against him," the SI said.
According to the family members of the deceased, Sundori Rani was taken to Godagari Upazila Health Complex after she fell senseless during sleep last night, from where she was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Shundori's family members were taking her to RMCH on an ambulance when a truck carrying tomatoes hit their car from the opposite side, leaving Shundori, her daughter Aduri and ambulance driver Jafar dead on the spot.
Later, officials of Godagari Fire Service rescued three of Shundori's family members and admitted them into RMCH.
