Rights of people with disability remain unfulfilled, says TIB chief

There remains a significant gap between the rights and the reality experienced by persons with disability people in Bangladesh, Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), said today.
A society free from discrimination is the dream for a new Bangladesh, Iftekharuzzaman said at a press conference organised to demand the protection of the legal rights of citizens with disability and the prevention of human rights violations. The event was hosted by the Disability Rights Watch (DRW) at TIB's office in Dhaka's Dhanmondi, with support from the TIB.
"It's not that nothing has been done regarding the rights of persons with disability, but it is not what was expected," the TIB chief said. "Their rights movement must be transformed into a people's movement. We are urging the government to implement these issues with utmost urgency."
Disability Rights Watch President Mansur Ahmed Chowdhury said out of the 18 crore people in the country, 2.15 crore are people with disability. "We want to say to the various political organisations that at least half of this number are voters. Development will never occur by ignoring us. We want to live in an inclusive society. We have come from darkness to light. There is no room to neglect people with disability."
