'Revenge for slap': Man sent to jail for killing factory worker in Lalbagh

A Dhaka court has ordered that a man accused of killing a factory worker in the capital's Lalbagh area be sent to jail, after he fatally stabbed the victim, reportedly in retaliation for being slapped during an earlier altercation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam recorded accused Abir's confession and then ordered that he be sent to jail today (10 December), confirmed Sub-Inspector Ashraful Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Police produced Abir before the court as he agreed to give a voluntary confessional statement. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Nazmuzzaman of Lalbagh Police Station, petitioned for the statement to be recorded.
According to the case details, a quarrel broke out on 8 December between Abir and two friends – Md Hossain, 25, the victim; and Nirob – over a trivial matter.
The argument escalated into a scuffle in which both sides exchanged slaps. Although the issue was later settled locally, Abir allegedly remained angered.
On 9 December afternoon, as victim Hossain was returning home from his workplace, Abir allegedly attacked him from behind near Dulal's shop in Shaheednagar under Lalbagh Police Station and stabbed him in the back.
Relatives rushed him to the hospital where he was declared dead. Family members later filed a murder case.
That evening, around 6:15pm, a team from RAB-10, with support from Lalbagh police, conducted an operation in the Kholamora area under Keraniganj Model Police Station and arrested Abir, said RAB's Law and Media Wing Director Intekhab Chowdhury during a press briefing this afternoon.
He added that the initial investigation indicates the conflict began on 8 December when Abir demanded a metal pipe from Nirob in Shaheednagar's Goli No 2. "When Nirob refused, Abir slapped him. Victim Hossain protested and slapped Abir in return," he said.
Although the matter was settled that night, Abir allegedly sought revenge the next day and fatally stabbed Hossain, added the RAB official.
