Rajshahi police instructed to re-arrest leaders of 'banned or fascist outfits' after bail if found active
When contacted, the Bangladesh Police Headquarters did not make any official comment on the matter.
The Rajshahi Range of police has instructed grassroots units to re-arrest leaders and activists of "banned or fascist" organisations after bail if found capable of reorganising and carrying out activities in the field, according to an official letter.
The letter, signed by Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan, "Leaders and activists of banned/suspended fascist organisations who, after being released on bail, are capable of strengthening, reorganising the party and demonstrating activities at the field level, must be re-arrested in other cases after their bail. Those who do not possess such characteristics do not need to be re-arrested for now."
The Business Standard has obtained a copy of the letter, which drew debate and discussions on social media.
The instruction was sent to superintendents of police in all eight districts under the Rajshahi Range, directing them to take necessary measures until further orders.
The letter also said existing laws and regulations must be followed while providing protocol and protection.
When contacted, the Bangladesh Police Headquarters did not make any official comment on the matter.
DIG Mohammad Shahjahan confirmed the authenticity of the letter but denied that it targeted any specific political party.
He told TBS that the directive was issued in response to renewed activities by several militant organisations and was intended solely to maintain law and order.
"There is no mention of the Awami League in my letter. If anyone assumes otherwise, that would be incorrect," he told the media, adding that the measure was aimed at ensuring public security.
