RAB arrests prime accused in Cox's Bazar parasailing death case from Dhaka's Mirpur

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the prime accused in the case filed over the death of a tourist during a parasailing accident at Cox's Bazar's Darianagar beach.

The accused, Md Farid, 45, was arrested last night (6 August) from the capital's Mirpur area during a joint raid by RAB-15 and RAB-4.

Confirming the matter, RAB-15 Assistant Director AM Faruk said the raid was carried out around 9:30pm at Azad Mini Market in Middle Pirerbag under Mirpur Model Police Station following intelligence-led surveillance.

According to RAB, Khulna resident Akshar Souvik Roy, 31, was on a parasailing ride operated by Farid at Darianagar beach in Cox's Bazar on 2 August when the rope allegedly snapped, causing him to fall into the sea.

RAB alleged that safety measures had not been properly ensured and that the lack of an immediate rescue response delayed Souvik's recovery. He was later taken to Cox's Bazar District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The victim's sister filed a murder case with Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station the following day, naming Farid as the prime accused.

After the incident, Farid allegedly went into hiding. Acting on a tip-off, RAB tracked him to Mirpur and arrested him during the joint operation.

During preliminary questioning, Farid told investigators that he had fled Cox's Bazar and gone into hiding in Dhaka after the incident, according to RAB.

He has since been handed over to Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station for further legal action, the RAB assistant director said.
