Purbachal’s underground metro construction to proceed without filling up canals
Dhaka's first underground metro rail, the MRT Line-1, is set to commence its primary construction work in Purbachal without filling up any canals.
Authorities have already invited tenders for four underground contract packages, which include tunnels and underground stations.
The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (DMRTDP) announced this in a media release today.

Under Contract Package CP-05, a temporary construction yard will be set up for building the tunnel and underground stations between Kuril Transition, Nadda Station and New Market.
The construction yard will be located on the southern side of the canal adjacent to the Purbachal Expressway in Kuril. Steel posts and metallic platforms will be installed above the canal, ensuring the canal remains intact.
The site will be restored to its original condition after the project is completed.
The press release also mentioned that the project received prior approval from the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (Rajuk) in 2021, and the MRT Line-1 construction has had an updated environmental clearance certificate renewed in 2024.
The DMRTDP assured that construction work will be carried out in a risk-free and environmentally friendly manner.
Several internationally experienced construction firms will be engaged in the development of Dhaka's underground metro rail to ensure the project aligns with global standards.
This marks a significant step in Dhaka's journey towards a modern and efficient mass transit system, with authorities striving to mitigate environmental impacts while ensuring progress.
