Prothom Alo, Daily Star editors given armed protection: Jahangir

The editors of the Prothom Alo and The Daily Star have been given gunmen for their protection, Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said.
"Gunmen have been given to protect the editors of the two national dailies, while security at their residences has also been strengthened," he said while briefing reporters today (22 December) after the 18th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order and on security preparations for the Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUcsu) polls.
He also said that 17 people have been arrested in connection with Thursday's attack on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star newspapers.
Emphasising the government's stance, Chowdhury said the authorities are fully committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order across the country.
Highest security for Tarique's homecoming
At the briefing, the home adviser also said that the highest level of security will be ensured for the homecoming of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on 25 December.
"Maximum security measures have already been taken to ensure the safe arrival of Tarique Rahman in the country," he said.
He added that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain fully alert and coordinated so that the event can take place peacefully.
