Protests erupt at Buet: Student suspended over 'obscene and derogatory remarks about women'
Buet authorities decided to temporarily suspend the accused student, identified as Shrishanta Roy, a 2021 batch student of the EEE department, and to file a case against him over allegations of cybercrime and harassment

Tensions flared at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) as hundreds of students staged protests late last night after screenshots of a student's "obscene and derogatory remarks about women" on the social media platform Reddit went viral.
The protests, which began outside the Directorate of Student Welfare office, saw students breaking open the office lock and later gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar, demanding the accused student's expulsion and legal action.
In an emergency meeting at midnight, the Buet authorities decided to temporarily suspend the accused student, identified as Shrishanta Roy, a 2021 batch student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department, and to file a case against him over allegations of cybercrime and harassment.
The meeting, chaired by Professor AKM Masud, director of the Directorate of Student Welfare, was attended by Shrishanta's father, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP's Lalbagh Zone Malik Ahsan Uddin Sami, university officials, and eight student representatives.
A student who attended the meeting told The Business Standard that the administration resolved to suspend Shrishanta's studentship pending investigation and initiate legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Buet authorities have kept the accused student under protection inside his dormitory amid ongoing campus unrest.
The controversy has sparked widespread outrage across the university community, with students calling for exemplary punishment and swift action to ensure accountability.
