Protests erupt at Bright School as students allege 'pressure and misbehaviour' by authorities drove peer to suicide
The students proceeded to confine the institution’s chairman and principal inside the campus.
Students of Bright School and College in Dhaka's Dania area have erupted in anger following the suicide of a Class 10 female student.
They allege that "pressure and misbehaviour" by the school authorities led to her death. Following the incident, students staged protests and confined the institution's chairman and principal inside the campus.
The protests began this morning (21 May), when students gathered on the campus demanding punishment for those they hold responsible for the incident.
Police from Kodomtoli police Station were deployed to the school premises as tensions escalated.
In the afternoon, law enforcement attempted to rescue the school chairman, Masud Hasan Liton, from confinement. However, during the operation, he was allegedly assaulted by agitated students and sustained injuries.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Labaid Hospital for advanced treatment.
Kodomtoli Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sajib Kumar Barai confirmed the incident, saying the chairman was injured during the rescue operation and was subsequently hospitalised.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Shyampur Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Akhiyul Islam said the situation remained tense until around 6:45pm, with students continuing their protests on campus.
