Awami League supporters harass, throw eggs at Adviser Mahfuj at New York Consulate
The protesters, who chanted slogans against Yunus and Mahfuj at the time, also broke the consulate’s glass doors.

Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam was harassed by Awami League (AL) activists and supporters while entering the Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York on Sunday (24 August).
Protesters, waving AL flags and chanting slogans such as "Joy Bangla" and "Joy Bangabandhu", threw eggs at Mahfuj. They also shouted slogans against Mahfuj, the interim government, and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, according to media reports.
Some of the demonstrators also broke the consulate's glass doors.
Mahfuj was attending a consulate event marking the anniversary of the July uprising as the chief guest.
Addressing the event afterwards, Golam Mortoza, press minister at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, DC, said, "In a country [Bangladesh] once ruled by a monarchy, there was a king, his sister, and his children who were princes and princesses. The whole nation belonged to them.
"You, the student leaders, shed blood to bring down that king and drive them out of the country. So now, if one of them throws an egg, makes a harsh comment, or demands Mahfuj Alam's removal, isn't that quite natural?"
Mahfuj did not address the matter during his speech, according to the report.
He thanked expatriates for their participation in the July movement, stating, "The contribution of expatriates will be mentioned in the July Charter. I am not part of any political party. We want future governments to be run in the spirit of July.
"The state should be free of corruption and accountable. The country must be prioritised over one's own political ideology. We must place the country and its people above all else."
After his remarks, the adviser invited open questions from the audience. Responding to a call for banning Indian television channels or media in Bangladesh, he said he does not support shutting anything down and has always advocated for better alternatives.
Mahfuj added that he is also not in favour of banning anything Awami League, according to reports.
The event included a welcome address by New York Consul General Muhammad Mozammel Haque, who also coordinated the question-and-answer session.
According to reports, a group of AL supporters was waiting outside the consulate for Mahfuj's exit, prompting consulate authorities to call the police. Under New York Police Department protection, he left the consulate after midnight.
The adviser will remain in the United States on an official visit until 27 August.
