Prime accused placed on 5-day remand over killing of police officer in Savar
Altaf, who was reportedly trying to intervene and stop the argument, came under attack from the accused.
A Dhaka court today (7 September) placed the prime accused Jahirul on a five-day remand in connection with the killing of Special Branch Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain in the Aminbazar area of Dhaka's Savar.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Siddika passed the order following a hearing, confirmed Arif Hossain, sub-inspector of the prosecution department.
Earlier, Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Md Zakir Al Ahsan of the Aminbazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station produced Jahirul before the court and sought a 10-day remand.

In the remand application, police said Jahirul needed to be taken into custody for questioning to ensure a proper investigation, uncover the circumstances and motive behind the killing, recover weapons allegedly used in the attack, and identify others involved in the incident.
According to the case statement, an argument broke out around 7:30pm on 5 September in front of an auto garage in Borodeshi area of Aminbazar over the parking of an auto-rickshaw.
Altaf, who was reportedly trying to intervene and stop the argument, came under attack from the accused.
The statement also states that he ran to his son's garment factory seeking shelter. Around 8:10pm, the accused allegedly arrived there armed with locally made weapons and launched an attack.
The accused allegedly beat Altaf indiscriminately with iron rods, pipes, hammers and sticks, leaving him critically injured. When his son, Ariful Islam, attempted to save him, he was also attacked and injured with sharp weapons, it added.
The attackers also allegedly vandalised the business premises, causing damage estimated at Tk5 lakh and stole Tk2.2 lakh from the cash box.
The injured men were later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Altaf dead. His son was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
Following the incident, the victim's wife, Shiuli Parvin, filed a murder case with Savar Police Station, accusing 15 people.
Among the 15, nine were arrested by RAB and police in separate drives yesterday.
