Press Club of India condemns Shafiqul Alam’s 'bootlicker' remark, seeks apology
In a statement released on their website, the PCI said Alam’s remarks were “reprehensible” and called for an apology
The Press Club of India (PCI) on Tuesday condemned comments by Shafiqul Alam, the spokesperson for Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus, after he referred to Indian journalists as "bootlickers" in a Facebook post.
In a statement released on their website, the PCI said Alam's remarks were "reprehensible" and called for an apology. The post, made on November 11, described reporters from several Indian and international outlets who interviewed former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as "Western journalists and their Indian bootlicking counterparts."
"Such comments are especially reprehensible as Mr Alam is himself a former journalist," the PCI said. "To describe professionals from responsible media outlets pursuing a genuine news story as 'bootlicking' journalists is certainly not expected from a person in a responsible position."
