Pregnant woman, 5-year-old son found dead in Faridpur home
Police say legal procedures are underway.
Police recovered the body of a child from one room and the hanging body of his pregnant mother from another in their home in Purbokandi village in Sadarpur Upazila of Faridpur last night (19 September), in what investigators suspect was a murder-suicide.
The deceased were Sumaiya Akter, 22, who was reportedly nine months pregnant, the wife of Ramzan Munshi, and Huzaifa, 5.
After visiting the scene, Additional Superintendent of Police (Bhanga Circle) Asif Iqbal said, "The child was found inside the room, throat slit and wrapped in a blanket, while Sumaiya was taken to the hospital as a last attempt to save her life.
"Preliminary findings suggest that due to family conflict, the mother killed her son before taking her own life. However, the exact cause will be confirmed after we receive the autopsy report."
The police officer added that legal procedures are underway.
According to locals, Ramzan married Sumaiya in 2020, and Huzaifa was their only child. Ramzan had worked in Singapore for several years before returning home two years ago. He had been preparing to go abroad again.
They said that upon noticing something was wrong, they informed the police.
Sumaiya was rescued in critical condition, and she died on the way while being taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, they added.
Meanwhile, Ramzan's father, Motaleb Munshi, said his son was working at a cattle farm nearby when he suddenly heard screams coming from near the house and learned of the tragic incident upon rushing home.
He insisted that Ramzan and Sumaiya's relationship was good, with no reported conflicts.
However, some neighbours, requesting anonymity, said quarrels between the couple were not uncommon.
