We must win fight to establish democracy: Khasru
BNP has been engaged in movements and sacrifices for the restoration of democracy over the past 15 to 16 years, says Khasru
BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today (22 November) said the party is determined to win the ongoing struggle to establish democracy in the country.
"We must win the fight to establish democracy by confronting all conspiracies," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "Historical Events of November 7: Ziaur Rahman and Today's Bangladesh" at the National Press Club, marking the Sepoy-People's Solidarity and Revolution Day.
Khasru said the BNP has been engaged in movements and sacrifices for the restoration of democracy over the past 15 to 16 years.
"The fight is not over yet. If we fail to win this battle, Bangladesh will lose," he added.
He said the people are the main guardians of democracy but alleged that various quarters are attempting to foil the upcoming election.
"By obstructing the election, they want to undermine democracy. These groups speak in favour of democracy but act against it. We must remain united and alert. The people will defeat all conspiracies," he said.
Describing democracy and the BNP as complementary, he said, "Just as the BNP cannot function without democracy, democracy cannot be complete without the BNP. Many democratic rights in this country were established through the BNP."
Khasru recalled that BNP founder and Proclaimer of Independence Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman assumed state leadership following the Sepoy-People's Revolution on 7 November 2025.
"He abolished BAKSAL, introduced multi-party democracy, ensured judicial independence and restored media freedom," he said.
He added that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia had remained uncompromising in her struggle for democracy, even enduring imprisonment, while the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman has continued guiding the movement from abroad.
Khasru said democracy would be re-established through the upcoming national parliamentary elections in February.
He urged party leaders and activists to work for the BNP-nominated candidates, saying unity is essential.
"Forgetting all differences, everyone should work for the party's nominated candidate," he added.
