Those who would come to power in the future should work for expatriates’ welfare: Nazrul Islam
Nazrul Islam Khan said expatriate workers are often praised and referred to as “remittance warriors,” but little has been done in practice to ensure their welfare
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has said he hopes that whoever assumes state power in the future will undertake new welfare-oriented programmes for Bangladeshi expatriates.
He made the remarks today (15 January) while speaking at a prayer organised at the National Press Club, seeking eternal peace for the soul of Begum Khaleda Zia.
Nazrul Islam Khan said expatriate workers are often praised and referred to as "remittance warriors," but little has been done in practice to ensure their welfare. He noted that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia had established the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare, thereby creating a permanent state structure dedicated to expatriates' well-being.
"We believe that those who are living abroad now, as well as those who did so in the past, will remember this contribution forever," he said.
The BNP leader also expressed hope that organisations of returned migrant workers would formulate plans for the long-term welfare of expatriate returnees. He said they could propose ways to improve existing laws or systems so that returning expatriates can benefit more effectively.
"There is sufficient scope to do so, but sincere efforts are required," he added.
Nazrul Islam Khan further said people across the country, irrespective of political affiliation, were deeply saddened by the death of Begum Khaleda Zia on 30 December. "Millions mourned her death, and the largest janaza in history was held in her honour," he claimed.
He concluded by saying that love for the people is reciprocated by the people, and working for the public earns public affection, something he described as proven by the legacies of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia.
