Tarique visits BNP Nayapaltan office for first time as PM, urges activists to prioritise public welfare
'We do not want to increase people’s suffering. Rather, we want to stand by them and work to solve their problems,' he says
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged leaders and activists of the BNP to prioritise public welfare and avoid any actions that could cause hardship to people.
"The people of the country are now looking to BNP, so we must work to solve people's problems without creating public suffering," the BNP chairman said after a meeting with party leaders at the party's central office in Nayapaltan tonight (28 March).
According to the party, this was Tarique Rahman's first visit to the Nayapaltan office after assuming office as prime minister.
"We do not want to increase people's suffering. Rather, we want to stand by them and work to solve their problems," Tarique added.
Addressing party men from the second-floor balcony following a meeting that lasted around one and a half hours, the BNP chairman issued clear instructions not to block roads or disrupt public life in any way.
Among those present were BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni.
Earlier, marking Independence Day of Bangladesh, he had called on party leaders and activists to gather at the central office. Responding to the call, a large number of party members began assembling in the area from this afternoon, creating heavy crowds.
Tarique Rahman arrived at the office around 7:30pm, where he was greeted with cheers and slogans by hundreds of leaders and activists.
The Nayapaltan area remained crowded throughout the day, with activists staging small processions and chanting slogans while waiting to greet their leader.
Tight security measures were put in place ahead of the visit. Law enforcement personnel were deployed in and around the area from early morning, additional CCTV cameras were installed, and barricades were set up at the entrance to the central office. Traffic movement on the VIP road in Nayapaltan also remained restricted.
Yesterday, the party's media cell said preparations for the visit were completed under the supervision of Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, political adviser to the prime minister.
Tarique Rahman had previously visited the party office after returning to the country on 29 December following nearly two decades abroad, when he was also received by a large number of leaders and activists.
