Potential NCP candidates emerge under Jamaat-led alliance
The names under discussion include NCP Convener Nahid Islam for Dhaka-11.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has preliminarily shortlisted potential candidates for a number of constituencies as part of seat-sharing negotiations with a Jamaat-e-Islami-led 10-party alliance.
Several leaders of the party have confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
According to party sources, under the proposed alliance-based arrangement, multiple NCP leaders may contest the next parliamentary election from constituencies in Dhaka and different districts across the country.
Sources said that the names under discussion include NCP Convener Nahid Islam for Dhaka-11, Javed Rasin for Dhaka-9, Nabila Tahsin for Dhaka-20, Dilshana Parul for Dhaka-19 and Nasiruddin Patwary for Dhaka-8.
Outside the capital, the proposed list includes Sarjis Alam for Panchagarh-1, Dr Md Abdul Ahad for Dinajpur-6, Akhter Hossen for Rangpur-4, Dr Atik Mujahid for Kurigram-2 and Saif Mustafiz for Sirajganj-6.
Other areas where NCP candidates have been shortlisted include Ashraf Uddin Mahdi in Brahmanbaria, Abdullah Al Amin in Narayanganj, Sujauddoula in Bandarban, Hasnat Abdullah in Cumilla, Hannan Masud and Sultan Zakaria in Noakhali, Dr Zahedul in Netrokona-11, Arif Adib in Barishal, Dr Mahmuda Mitu in Jhalakathi, Mahbub Alam in Lakshmipur and Sarwar Tushar in Narsingdi.
Party leaders also said that the names of Pritam Das in Moulvibazar, Jobairul Arif in Chattogram, Jarjis Kadir in Natore and Molla Faruk Ehsan in Chuadanga are being discussed as part of the alliance negotiations.
However, party sources cautioned that the list is not final yet, adding that minor changes may occur depending on the progress of discussions with alliance partners.
They said the final list of candidates will be announced formally by the alliance.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman announced yesterday that the NCP and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have joined the Jamaat-led alliance, previously comprising eight parties.
He said the seat-sharing agreement is nearly finalised and that the remaining nominations will soon be submitted.
