Political leaders publicly speaking on how to control administration: Nahid
Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said leaders and activists of political parties are publicly discussing seizing and controlling the administration.
The Election Commission and government are failing to take a strong position to ensure a fair election, he said today (23 November) at the Shaheed Abu Sayed International Convention Center in Shahbagh, Dhaka, during a press conference of the NCP's central election management committee.
"We are seeing that leaders and activists of various parties are openly talking about how to seize the administration, how to control it," he added.
The party's top leader alleged there is no level playing field in the election campaign.
"There was a culture of misusing money and professional power before. There should have been a strong position from the government to change the situation this time, but we are not seeing that."
He added that despite various discussions in the media about NCP forming alliances, he confirmed that the party would field candidates for 300 constituencies independently.
"Do not pay attention to any misinformation. The NCP will contest 300 seats independently. However, if in the future someone who aligns with our ideals wants to join, we will openly announce it in advance."
Nomination seekers from across the country were present to meet the nomination board.
Nahid mentioned that after a two-day interview process beginning today, involving 1,484 candidates, a final list of qualified candidates will be published.
"The people of the country have supported our call. After this interview process is completed, the final list will be released."
The NCP leader further noted, "Other parties are nominating candidates who show no trace of new politics. Those who would have been nominated five years ago are being nominated again this time.
"We want to move forward with new, honest, competent, and qualified people."
