NCP proposes Constituent Assembly for July Charter implementation
NCP argued that the July Charter reflects the universal opinion of the people and therefore must be implemented through a directly representative body.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has proposed the formation of a Constituent Assembly as the most democratic way to implement the July Charter.
In a letter, signed by the party's Joint Convenor Javed Rasin, sent to the National Consensus Commission Vice President Professor Ali Riaz, the party outlined three reasons in favour of forming a Constituent Assembly.
NCP argued that the July Charter reflects the universal opinion of the people and therefore must be implemented through a directly representative body.
"Such a process will ensure broader democratic participation, safeguarding inclusivity and legitimacy," the letter stated.
The party also noted that this approach would preserve the fundamental spirit of democracy while helping to prevent any future political disputes or legitimacy crises.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Javed Rasin said, "We are stressing that the charter must have a clear implementation mechanism. As before, our position is that only through the formation of a Constituent Assembly can this charter be implemented.
"We hope the consensus commission will consider our proposal and include it in their recommendations."
