The National Citizens Party (NCP) has distanced itself from the simultaneous movement by Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamic parties as it opposes the proportional representation (PR) system in the lower house, party's Convener Nahid Islam said today (19 September).
Speaking at the party's coordination committee meeting today (19 September), Nahid said, "We are not part of Jamaat's simultaneous movement because we do not support PR in the lower house. We have taken a firm stand against it."
He, however, stressed that the party supports PR in the upper house. "We only demand PR in the upper house, along with an effective mechanism for accountability. The July Charter must be implemented with that in mind."
Addressing future political strategies, the NCP leader said, "At this moment, we are not considering alliances with major political parties. We will move forward independently with our own political objectives and unite the people.
"If any party agrees with our goals and objectives, they are welcome to join us," he added.
Leaders from NCP's district and upazila coordination committees across the country attended the meeting, where preparations for national and Constituent Assembly elections, expansion of organisational structures down to union and ward level, and strategies to resist Awami League "fascism" were discussed.
