National unity doesn’t happen just because some parties sign July Charter: NCP’s Nahid
“At the reform commission, discussions were only about elections, with no signs of democracy,” Nahid said
National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has said that signing the July National Charter by some political parties does not create national unity.
"On this historic day, people are being deceived in the name of 'national consensus' while the workers' force protests on the streets. Fires are breaking out in factories where a worker's life is valued at Tk2-3 lakh," he said today (17 October).
Speaking at the launch of NCP's workers' wing, "Jatiyo Sramik Shakti", at the capital's Eskaton Garden, he said national unity is when people from all classes work together for the country's welfare. "But there has been no discussion on the labour commission or the health sector.
"At the reform commission, discussions were only about elections, with no signs of democracy."
He added that under Sheikh Hasina's rule over the past 16 years, workers have been most oppressed. Early in 2024, they had to protest for fair wages, and some were killed when police opened fire. "Workers have not been included in the unity process."
"Mafias from the fascist era were never brought under law but their businesses were protected. They exploited workers, and Jatiyo Sramik Shakti will stand by those who keep the economy running," he said.
Nahid said national unity happens when all levels of people unite and fight, as seen in the July Uprising. "At that time, there were no political party banners, only students, workers, and people from various professions. NCP wants to build that kind of unity."
