Lack of exemplary punishment fuelling mob culture: Rumeen Farhana
She made these remarks while raising a notice in the National Parliament today.
Independent MP Rumeen Farhana has said that the absence of exemplary punishment is encouraging the rise of mob culture in the country. She noted that despite repeated assurances from the prime minister and the home minister that mob violence and a culture of impunity would be eliminated, such incidents continue to occur one after another in reality.
She made these remarks while raising a notice in the National Parliament today (20 April).
She said that over the past one and a half years, and particularly in the last two months, the country has increasingly witnessed mob incidents.
"The governor of Bangladesh Bank has been targeted by mobs, as has the MD of BSS. Mob incidents have occurred on the Barishal court premises and inside the Supreme Court lawyers' room.
"The office of The Daily Star was attacked. More recently, a complainant was beaten to death in Kushtia," she added.
She pointed out that the home minister had assured multiple times that mob culture would no longer exist in Bangladesh and that impunity would end. He had also assured that people would receive justice. However, she said, mob incidents have continued to take place in different parts of the country.
Drawing attention to the home minister, she added that the prime minister had made similar commitments. According to her, when people fail to receive justice, such a culture grows and people become involved in it.
The MP from Brahmanbaria-2 constituency further said, "Frustration, anger, and deep inequality persist among people, and above all, there is a lack of exemplary punishment. When justice is not ensured, people tend to gravitate towards such anarchic behaviour."
