Jamaat expresses concern over LPG price hike, demands reversal
He also pointed out that the recent sharp increase in fuel prices, combined with rising LPG costs, has further aggravated the situation.
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern over the recent decision to increase liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices and called for its immediate withdrawal.
In a statement issued today (19 April), Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar said the decision announced by the authorities would place significant additional pressure on ordinary people.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) today raised the price of a 12-kg LPG cylinder by Tk212, setting the new retail price at Tk 1,940.
Porwar noted that this comes shortly after another price adjustment earlier this month. On 2 April, LPG prices were increased by Tk387, setting the rate at Tk1,728.
He said the back-to-back hikes within a short period would make daily life increasingly difficult for consumers.
He also pointed out that the recent sharp increase in fuel prices, combined with rising LPG costs, has further aggravated the situation.
"Such abnormal price hikes will intensify pressure on low- and middle-income households. LPG is an essential household fuel, and this increase will raise cooking costs and overall living expenses," reads the statement.
Porwar urged the authorities to reconsider and withdraw the price hike immediately.
