Ignoring '24' to embrace '26' will not be good for nation: Jamaat ameer
In response to a question about whether there had been discussions with the ruling party regarding the deputy speaker post, the Jamaat ameer said there had been informal talks.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said ignoring "24" while embracing "26" would not bring good news for the nation.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the LD Hall of the National Parliament today (11 March) after a meeting.
Referring to the July National Charter issue, Shafiqur said, "If '24' exists, then '26' will exist. Otherwise, '26' has no meaning. Around 69% of the people of Bangladesh have expressed support for the proposal and therefore it cannot be disregarded."
"We will continue to play our role in support of it," he added.
The Jamaat chief further said his party will take positions in parliament based on national interest rather than opposing for the sake of opposition. "We will not oppose just for the sake of opposing. If we cooperate, it will be for the country and its people. Even if we oppose, it will also be for the nation."
He added that Jamaat would fight political battles primarily inside parliament but could also take to the streets if necessary, describing it as part of democratic practice.
Shafiqur also said the party does not favour rushing to court over political matters unless absolutely necessary. "If we are compelled, then we will seek legal remedy," he said.
Expressing hope about parliamentary proceedings, he said the speaker should ensure fairness and allow the opposition adequate space so that democracy can become sustainable in Bangladesh.
In response to a question about whether there had been discussions with the ruling party regarding the deputy speaker post, the Jamaat ameer said there had been informal talks.
"Jamaat wants the reform proposals under the July charter implemented as a package and expects the opposition to receive its due share in line with those proposals."
